The ancient temple was opened due to the imperial prayer by Emperor Kinmei (reign 532~571). In Tenpyo year 6 (734), an ascetic named Jugen prayed that the Junishagongen would come from Kumano in Kishu, and made the dojo a central dojo for Shugendō. Afterwards, Kobo Daishi revived this hall. Minamoto no Yoritomo repaired the temple that was devastated again during the Kamakura Period.
