No. 66 Kyogozan Unpen-ji

Unpen-jiHistory and origin of

It is a temple in Awa, but as a Fudasho, the first one for Sanuki. It is a hallowed ground at the highest altitude of 927m from all the Shikoku hallowed grounds, and was considered a difficult one in the past. Currently it is possible to use a rope way to climb from the foot to the summit of the mountain. When the Kobo Daishi was 16 years old, and he visited in search of building material for the seventy-fifth Zentsu-ji, the sacred mountain made a profound impact on his heart and he founded a temple. This is said to be the foundation of Unben-ji. This became a dojo for academic and training for monks in Shikoku, and was also known as "Shikoku Takano".
