The Hachikaji is a hallowed ground which the 打ち始め started, located at the foot of the mountain from Misakatoge which is on the border of Matsuyama City and Kumakogen-cho, Kamiukeana-gun. Gyoki established this temple for propagation purposes in advance of the eye-opening of the Great Buddha of Nara. Carved and enshrined Bhaiṣajyaguru out of a sandalwood tree as a principal image, and the Nikko / Gekko Bodhisattva as a side temple and the Twelve Heavenly Generals as kin. Then, Kobo Daishi repaired the temple that was there, and made it one of the temples for Shikoku hallowed ground. In the precinct towers a large Chinese juniper tree that is over a thousand years old (city natural treasure).
