No. 51 Kumanozan Ishite-ji

Ishite-jiHistory and origin of

Ochi Tamazumi from a powerful clan sensed this was a sacred place and on the occasion that the Kami of the three main Kumano shrines in Kishu and the 12 shrines were enshrined, established the spiritual protection of the state, and became the imperial prayer temple for Emperor Shomu (reign 724~749). Then, Gyoki carved the Bhaiṣajyaguru statue and enshrined it as a principal image and opened the temple.
When it was first opened, it was known as "Anyo-ji" but according to the legend that says Emon Saburo who first started the Shikoku Henro, it is said that the temple was renamed to "Ishite-ji". With a Kamakura Period style, it is a famous temple for relaying the mandala style temple arrangement to the modern day, and many of the buildings have been designated a national treasure or an important cultural property.
