No. 58 Sareizan Senyu-ji

Senyu-jiHistory and origin of

It is located on the summit of Sakureizan and has a great view of the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the "Shimanami kaido" しまなみ海道 (island and sea path).
It originated when the sovereign of Iyo, Ochi Morioki built the temple on the imperial prayer of Emperor Tenji (reign 668~671), and it is said that the principal image, Senjū Kannon was carved by a Tatuko (female dragon) who came out of the sea while praying three times after every stroke of the blade. In addition it is said that a monk named Abo senin 阿坊仙人 for many years maintained the complete seven-structured temple compound but is said to have suddenly disappeared in Yoro year 2 (718).
