No. 60 Ishizuchizan Yokomine-ji

Yokomine-jiHistory and origin of

Ishizuchisan (altitude 1982m), the highest peak in West Japan is the sacred land for mountain worship and is also the dojo for Shugendō. In "Sangō Shiiki" written by Kobo Daishi, "sometimes, straddling across the rock and resisting victuals (fasting) separated from the world (penance) " describing the time he spent training in this mountain. The precinct is located in the middle of the mountain on the north side (750m). It is the third highest in the Shikoku hallowed ground and is the most difficult place in terms of "pilgrim rolling". A forest road now exists and it is possible to go near it by car. It is also a location well known for the rhododendron.
