No. 84 Nanmenzan Yashima-ji

It is located on the summit of a huge plateau made of lava at an altitude of 293m, and is on the south ridge of Yashima, known for being the historic battlefield of the Battle of Genpei. It is said to have been founded by Ganjin-wajo, and it is looked upon as Kobo Daishi being the revival founder. It also prospered as a hallowed ground for Mountain Buddhism. The principal image Eleven faced Senjū Kannon created during the Tenryaku Period (947~957), and the main hall built during the Kamakura Period are important cultural properties of the country. It transmits the Kamakura to Edo Period style to this day.
