No. 72 Gahaishizan Mandara-ji

Mandara-jiHistory and origin of

According to auspiciousness, the foundation was the oldest of the Shikoku hallowed ground, in Suiko year 4 (596), and was founded as a shrine built to the house guardian deity for lord Saeki of Sanuki. Kobo Daishi visited here the year after he returned from Tang, and it is said it was to pray for the soul of his mother Tamayorigozen who passed away. Taking the Shoryu-ji in Tang as an example for founding a temple, and enshrining the mandala of Vajradhatu Garbhadhatu that he had brought back from Tang, renamed the temple name as Mandara-ji. In the middle ages it prospered so much that it competed for territory with Zentsu-ji, and there is a "Hirune rock" that remains which is said to be where Saigyouhoushi took a nap.
