The area surrounding Koyama-ji is where it is said Kobo Daishi played often as a child. When Kobo Daishi was in the prime of his life and searching for sacred locations on Koyama, he met an old man. Daishi was enlightened that the old man was Vaisravana and carved a statue and enshrined it in a rock cave. In Kōnin year 12 (821) when Daishi was the steward in charge of repairing Mannoike, he carved a Bhaiṣajyaguru and prayed, was successful in the construction work and with the money received for the work, it is said he founded Koyama-ji.
