No. 34 Motoozan Tanema-ji

Tanema-jiHistory and origin of

During the reign of Emperor Youme (reign 585~587), a sculptor from the ancient Korean kingdom who was brought over to build the Shitenno-ji in Osaka was attached by a storm off the coast of Tosa while returning to his country. The origin is said that he carved the Bhaiṣajyaguru, and enshrined it in the summit of the Motoozan praying for maritime safety. Afterwards, Kobo Daishi opened the temple with that Bhaiṣajyaguru as the principal image. At the time he sowed the seeds of 5 grains that he brought back from Tang and is said to have named the temple Tanema-ji as well. The arranged ladles with the missing bottom are for praying for easy delivery.
