No. 37 Fujiisan Iwamoto-ji

Iwamoto-jiHistory and origin of

Iwamoto-ji is the only temple in the Shikoku hallowed ground that enshrines Goson as the principal image. Kobo Daishi who visited this land in Konin Period (810~824) divided the object of worship of Niida Myojin into five shrines and enshrined as Honchibutsu and built the Matsu-ji Gokaji. Then, under the orders of separation of the Gods and Buddha in Meiji, it has a history of having the Goson Honchibutsu and Fudasho unified into one location under Iwamoto-ji. The coffered ceiling of the main hall is decorated with 575 paintings gathered from all over the country.
