The temple is located at around the eighth station of Shozanjiyama, altitude of 938m, and is the second highest mountain Fudasho among the Shikoku hallowed ground. It is one of the Fudasho that was called "Pilgrim rolling". Once upon a time there was a large snake with divine power in this mountain and when Kobo Daishi visited this land, tried to interfere by creating a sea of fire, but the Daishi walked forward while chanting the mantra and confined the snake in a rock cave. The mountain and temple names are derived from this unusual legend. The precinct is lined with large cedar trees that are hundreds of years old which welcome the pilgrims.
