No. 18 Boyouzan Onzan-ji

Onzan-jiHistory and origin of

It was a dojo forbidden to women, and to save disaster and pestilence, but during the Enryaku Period (782~806), when Kobo Daishi was training at this temple his birth mother Tamayorigozen came for a visit, and Daishi prayed to fulfill releasing the ban on women, and greeted his mother. Afterwards his mother shaved off her hair, and dedicated her hair, so the Daishi renamed the mountain temple as "Boyozan Onzan-ji". In front of the Daishi-do, there is a building where Tamayorigozen's shaved hair is enshrined. The pilgrimage to Komatsujima from Wakayama on boat started their pilgrimage from this temple.
