This temple is nationally famous as the temple for warding off evils. In Kōnin year 6 (815) when Kobo Daishi was 42 years old, he prayed to ward off evil for himself and other sentient being, and carved the evil warding Bhaiṣajyaguru sitting statue, and made this the principal image of the temple rooted in praying for warding off evils. Since that time, starting with Emperor Heizei, flourished as the imperial prayer temple to warding off evils for Emperor Saga, Emperor Junna. This is the only Fudasho where you can overlook the sea in Tokushima Prefecture.
