No. 10 Tokudozan Kirihata-ji

Kirihata-jiHistory and origin of

The name Kirihata is derived from the legend of a weaving girl. While Kobo Daishi was on a preaching tour and seeking a piece of cloth in order to mend a worn priest garb, the girl, without hesitation, cut a piece from a cloth she was weaving and held it out. As gratitude, he carved a Senjū Kannon and performed Abhisheka, and the girl is said to have transformed into a Guanyin Bodhisattva. During the middle ages, it was one of the leading temples and received the protection of the patron Hosokawa. The inside of the Daitō is of a unique structure in Japan as the space between the first story and the second story is rectangular in shape, and is an important cultural property of Japan.
