No. 43 Genkozan Meiseki-ji

Meiseki-jiHistory and origin of

The ancient temple was opened due to the imperial prayer by Emperor Kinmei (reign 532~571). In Tenpyo year 6 (734), an ascetic named Jugen prayed that the Junishagongen would come from Kumano in Kishu, and made the dojo a central dojo for Shugendō. Afterwards, Kobo Daishi revived this hall. Minamoto no Yoritomo repaired the temple that was devastated again during the Kamakura Period. Since then, devotion by warriors were very strong and it became the prayer temple for the Date Clan, the Uwajima warlord. Kumano Mandala which is said to have been created in the Muromachi Period is a tangible cultural property of the prefecture.
