Opened by Myoe Shonin as an imperial prayer temple for Empress Kouken (reign 749~758). Then, Kobo Daishi revived the temple and converted it to the Shingon sect. During the middle of the Heian Period, Kūya (903~972) stayed there and carried out missionary work. The main hall and the chancel of the shrine were built in the Bunmei Period (1469-1487), and the simple and majestic construction which comprises the Japanese and Tang styles is designated as an important cultural property of the country.
