No. 87 Fudarakusan Nagao-ji

Nagao-jiHistory and origin of

This temple is famous as the temple where Shizuka Gozen became a nun. According to auspiciousness, this temple started when Gyoki sensed a vision in a willow tree on the roadside, and carved a Sho-Kannon Bosatsu-zo and enshrined it. Later on, Kobo Daishi before leaving for Tang made a visit, and praying for bumper crops, conducted a prayer and austerity homa, and gave amulets to the people. This legend has been passed down to the present day, and on the 7th day of the New Year every year, the "Battling for good fortune" Daieyo-Fukubai festival is held in grand style. To the right and left of the Nio (or Kongorikishi) gates are the Kyodo made of tuff, and they are said to be memorial towers for the recruited Nirvana who died during the Mongolian Invasions (of 1274 and 1281). After the Meiji Restoration this Honbo was temporary provided to be used as a public facility, such as a school.
